Organization of TFDA

In order to meet the anticipated challenges in offering its services, TFDA has organized itself (see organogram) on the following four layered structure with the following features:

At the top of the structure is the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, who is responsible for strategic issues with regards to the TFDA’s performance. She/he is advised by the Ministerial Advisory Board for which is a Chairperson.

The next in the structure is the Director General, M. Ndomondo-Sigonda. The Director General is the overall Chief Executive of the organization. She is responsible for the day to day operations of the Authority. Her office is comprised of the legal counsel, internal audit and quality assurance. These three offices are responsible for providing supportive services in areas not linked to any of the specialized directorates. Below the Director General are the four Directorates of TFDA:

The Directorate of Product Evaluation and Registration
Director: L.R. Mhangwa
The Directorate is established to ensure that all food, drugs, herbal drugs, cosmetics and medical devices are correctly evaluated for quality, safety and effectiveness before being approved for use. The directorate is also involved with controlling promotional activities of products regulated by TFDA.

Directorate of Inspection and Surveillance
Director: O. Kowero
This Directorate is established to conduct inspection, monitoring and surveillance to ascertain compliance with the standard requirements that apply to the manufacture and supply of for food, drugs, herbal drugs, cosmetics and medical devices in Tanzania. This is achieved by licensing and inspecting all manufacturing sites, wholesale and retail dealers and importers. The directorate is also responsible with post-marketing risk analysis of products regulated by TFDA.

The Directorate of Laboratory Services
Director: C. N Ugullum
The Directorate is established to provide analytical services for enhancing decision-making by the Authority. Analysis are carried out to ascertain the quality, safety and effectiveness of food, drugs, herbal drugs, cosmetics and medical devices manufactured or imported into Tanzania.

The Directorate of Business Support
Director: Dr S. S. Ngendabanka
This Directorate is established to provide and enhance good management of TFDA’s resources and to give support to all technical operations of the Authority. It is also involved with development and implementation of public education programmes and Management information Systems.

NOTE: TFDA collaborates with the Regional and Local Authorities in enforcing the Food, Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 2003
